Medjool Date and Citrus BBQ Sauce

Medjool Date and Citrus BBQ Sauce


  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup grapefruit juice
  • 1 cup unsalted tomato puree 
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 12 Natural Delights Medjool Dates, pitted and coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. each of salt and ground black pepper


  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan set over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and let simmer for 15 minutes. Using a blender or immersion blender, pulverise the mixture, then simmer for 10 minutes more. 
  2. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for up to 10 days.
